FAMILY: Culicidae SUBFAMILY: Culicinae GENUS: Aedes SUBGENUS:Ochlerotatus IDENTIFYING CHARACTERS: Maxillary palpus of female much less than half the length of either the antenna or proboscis Postpsiracular setae present Prespiracular setae absent Scales on the dorsal surface of the radial sector and media narrow BIONOMICS: Larvae are found in salt marshes along the coast and in brackish water in some inland states. The larvae are found all year in the southern portions of its range. Females are very strong fliers, occasionally found 100 miles from nearest known larval habitats. Females are persistent and will bite any time, day or night, when their resting places are invaded. MEDICAL IMPORTANCE: Sollicitans is a vector of dog heartworm. DISTRIBUTION:
