FAMILY: Culicidae SUBFAMILY: Culicinae GENUS: Aedes SUBGENUS:Ochlerotatus IDENTIFYING CHARACTERS: Maxillary palpus of female much less than half the length of either the antenna or proboscis Postpsiracular setae present Prespiracular setae absent Scales on the dorsal surface of the radial sector and media narrow BIONOMICS: In the pacific coast portion of its range sierrensis utilizes tree holes, of any tree species, or tree-hole-like habitats. In the eastern portion of its range it is found exclusively in cottonwood in riverine situations. MEDICAL IMPORTANCE: Sierrensis has been shown to be capable of laboratory transmission of Western equine encephalitis (WEE) and dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). DISTRIBUTION:
