IDENTIFYING CHARACTERS:
BIONOMICS: In the pacific coast portion
of its range sierrensis utilizes tree holes, of any tree species,
or tree-hole-like habitats. In the eastern portion of its range it
is found exclusively in cottonwood in riverine situations.
MEDICAL IMPORTANCE: Sierrensis
has been shown to be capable of laboratory transmission of Western
equine encephalitis (WEE) and dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis).
