FAMILY: Culicidae SUBFAMILY: Culicinae GENUS: Aedes SUBGENUS:Protomacleaya IDENTIFYING CHARACTERS: Maxillary palpus of female much less than half the length of either the antenna or proboscis Postpsiracular setae present Prespiracular setae absent Scales on the dorsal surface of the radial sector and media narrow BIONOMICS: Larvae are found primarily in treeholes and occasionally in artifical containers and rockholes. MEDICAL IMPORTANCE: This species is a proven vector of the LaCrosse strain of California encephalitis. Under laboratory conditions an efficient vector of yellow fever, eastern equine, Venezuelan and Western equine encephalomyelitis. It is also a potential vector of Dog Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) DISTRIBUTION:
