Approximately 3,300 species of mosquitoes exist throughout the world. and of those, 167 species and subspecies belonging to 13 genera occur in North America (north of Mexico). Some species in the United States are potential vectors of malaria, dengue, yellow fever and filariasis. Some are vectors of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), Western equine encephalitis (WEE), Saint Louis encephalitis (SLE), and dog heartworm.
