information useful to both the layman and the professional entomologist.
Each page contains the scientific name, the bibliographic reference
to the original description, brief notes on the habitat of the immatures,
the biting habits of the adults, diseases that they can carry, and
a map showing countries in which a species has been found. Approximately 3,300 species
of mosquitoes exist throughout the world. and of those, 167 species
and subspecies belonging to 13 genera occur in North America (north
of Mexico). Some species in the United States are potential vectors
of malaria,
dengue, yellow fever and filariasis. Some are vectors of Eastern
equine encephalitis (EEE), Western
equine encephalitis (WEE), Saint
Louis encephalitis (SLE), and dog heartworm.
