Bionomics
Adults of Lutzomyia claustrei have been collected from malaise traps in Venezuela (Feliciangeli et al. 1988) and CDC light traps in Brazil (Ready et al. 1983).
Medical Importance
"Ryan et al. (1987c) isolated unidentified Leishmania from L. claustrei collected in northern Brazil. Apparently, these are the same parasites that Grimaldi et al. studied (1991) and provisionally determined to be new to science. This sand fly appears also to be a host of I (Naiff et al. 1989)." (Young & Duncan 1994:577)
